Outreach Librarian

andra R. AllenCassandra R. Allen has been the Outreach Librarian in the Outreach and Special Populations Branch, Division of Specialized Information Services (SIS) since September 2000. Ms. Allen’s responsibilities include the planning and implementation of outreach programs and training to minority and underserved populations. Ms. Allen has developed projects with the National Medical Association, Student National Medical Association, National Black Nurses Association, ethnic caucuses of the American Library Association,  Medical Library Association’s African American Medical Librarians Alliance,  HBCU Faculty Development Network, Kappa Kares and a community-based grassroots organization called Jesus People Against Pollution (JPAP).


Before coming to SIS, Ms. Allen was the Head of the Collection Access Section (CAS) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) (1986-2000).  During those 14 years, she was responsible for formulating policy related to access to the General Collection of the NLM.  She also administered an international interlibrary loan operation, and oversaw the provision of General Collection materials to the Main Reading Room of the NLM.  Before coming to NLM, Ms. Allen was the Head of the Circulation Section in the Loan Division at the Library of Congress from 1984 to 1986.


Ms. Allen was a member of the NLM Diversity Council from 1996 – 2000, and served as the founding chair of the Council from 1996 – 1999. For her work on the Council, she received the NLM Director’s Honor Award and the NIH Champion of Diversity Award. The National Medical Association has also recognized Ms. Allen for outstanding service and support.


Ms. Allen received her Masters in Library Science from the University of Maryland and a Bachelors of Arts from the University of Virginia.
